Lee Ann you inspire people in ways you can't even begin to know! People from near and far.

I'm no artist, but through your ideas, I've often found expression and have found I can give things a go when I might lack confidence. I now say, who cares! I am creative for me and I don't care if someone else likes it or not. I think when you get past that bit, and realise that creativity comes in many forms, then you have a road for being expressive. If others like it or get something from it, it's a bonus.

Thank you for this post, and thank you for sharing this video. It conveys many of the things that inspire me everyday, I'm thrilled it inspired you, and I hope it inspires your readers. We bottle up so much living with diabetes, and using creative expression to get that out can make a world of difference for each of us individually, but also as a community when we share it.

Hugs to you for this post :)

I am a long term (43 years) type one Diabetic who empathises with you as I too have problems with tendonns in feet and hands. I am glad I do not also have Lupus as the constant "discovery" of more complications from the Diabetes is enough and gets rather exhausting... so far tendon problems, Diabetic retinopathy, Diabetic mastopathy, slightly loose teeth (had nott heard that is a comon complication until my last Dentist visit), neuropathy, some nephropathy (but not too bad at this stage), high b.p (OK on medication), Tibia (bone) has died in my ankle post Potts fracture. Then there's the constant daily injections and clock watching, diet etc. Not much fun and I am doing better than some. I try really hard but my body won't work accoring to the book and things fluctuate. But I love life and am a passionate artist but am becoming a bit of a grumpy old woman as things get tougher... oh and it costs a lot to have the "privelege" of living with this condition!!!

Forest, I do think you make a very valid point!

It's the exact reason that the press has persisted with these myths, and why people who should know better don't. The more famous, the more apparently credible people, publications or TV programs appear to be. Sheeple just follow.

On the other hand, what doctor or medical system has the time or money for the education it would really take? And it's a lot! 33 years and I'm still learning! Not everyone is on the internet and not everyone trawls the really good diabetes sites, does research or has the money, time or motivation to do attend private classes. I certainly don't have the time to read what I want to, and more, to understand every single last aspect of diabetes. I don't have the biochemical background to make that chore easier, when I do read something new.

Not sure how the issues that Paula Deen will create could be solved. Does anyone?

I do not blame her or anyone for their diabetes, My one problem is the celebrity worship in our society today. According to My doctor people are already mistaking the medication she advertises as a cure instead of doing research and learning about Diabetes.

WONDERFUL list, Suzie! What I'd like to add: more money for research into the genetic and epigenetic causes of both Type 1 and Type 2. While both seem to need a trigger to set them off, the basic tendency is clearly genetic, and almost certainly polygenic, and a real cure can't happen until the causes are known, and scientists know what to target. A corollary to that: better research into the actual metabolic disorders of obesity, because while obesity is NOT synonymous with Type 2, it would be nice to be able to treat the disorders that contribute to Type 2.

An aside: in the 20 years that I have had diabetes, and almost 13 years on the pump, I have seen LOTS of progress on the development of better pumps, but very little progress in meters. Yes, the meters are more convenient now (didn't used to be able to test discreetly away from home), but as you said, accuracy is the BIG bugaboo!

Hi Melitta! Yes, definitely hear what you are saying, but in Australia, anyone who needs insulin must register with the NDSS and state what type they have. It doesn't matter how many are misdiagnosed for my purposes. I just want an accurate number for Type 1 registrants - baseline. Then we can add the 20% who really have LADA or other forms of T1, but are still misdiagnosed (and may remain so).

As you know, it was sheer fluke and my avid determination to be tested that saw me highly GAD-65 positive with the original and follow up test. That was 33 years after initial dx and with me being very active on the DOC, and reading everything I can get my hands on. How many aren't active in the diabetes world, and don't have a clue, along with their clueless doctors?

Hi Susi: One of the main problems with quantifying the numbers of people with Type 1 diabetes, anywhere in the world, is that most people with adult-onset Type 1 diabetes are misdiagnosed as having Type 2 diabetes. In numerous studies throughout the world, when antibody testing is performed on people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, about 10% are antibody positive and in actuality have Type 1 autoimmune diabetes. So the numbers with Type 1 are actually about 20-25% of the total diabetic population.
